Why I Became an SLP
Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a passion for learning and helping others. I always knew I wanted to work with people in a meaningful way. As I grew older, I found myself naturally stepping into roles where I could support and teach, whether it was leading dance classes, volunteering with youth at my church, or babysitting.
It wasn’t until college that I discovered the field of Speech-Language Pathology, and I instantly fell in love. The idea of helping individuals of all ages find their voice and build their confidence deeply resonated with me. At the same time, I noticed a lack of representation and culturally responsive support for communities who spoke my language. That realization inspired me to dive into the world of bilingual language development, determined to become someone who could support individuals on their communication journeys while embracing their full identities.
I earned my Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Marquette University, along with a Bilingual English-Spanish Specialization. Over the years, I’ve worked in a variety of settings, supporting people across the lifespan, from toddlers saying their first words, to adults recovering their speech after a stroke. Each person I’ve worked with has taught me something new and further fueled my passion for this work.
What I Love About My Job
The most rewarding moments are when I see my clients apply what they’ve learned and begin to advocate for themselves, especially when families get to celebrate something they weren’t sure was possible. Those are the moments that melt my heart and remind me exactly why I do this.
Starting Embrace – Bilingual Speech is a dream come true. It allows me to bring everything I’ve learned back to the communities that shaped me and to create a space where every voice, every culture, and every story is truly embraced.
