Why does a Bilingual Evaluation matter?
Comprehensive bilingual assessment is pivotal in ensuring we distinguish between a language difference and disorder. It requires a clinician to go beyond using the correct formal assessment or using an interpreter to translate for a child. Rather, it requires in-depth knowledge of both languages at stake and a deep understanding of the child’s linguistic background including how a child’s language(s) shape their experiences within and outside the classroom? Only this way can we ensure each bilingual child is receiving an accurate diagnosis and individualized objectives that will best support their educational and functional goals.

Embrace can complete comprehensive Bilingual Speech-Language Assessments for PreK - 12th grade in the following areas: Receptive/Expressive Language, Speech Sound Disorders (Articulation/Phonology), Childhood Apraxia of Speech, Fluency, Social Communication
Comprehensive Evaluations consist of any or all of the following:
Case history including record review (review of Domain documentation or previous IEPs and student, parent, teacher, and/or related service provider interviews)
Selection and administration of standardized assessment(s) in English and Spanish
Selection and administration of informal assessment measures (screeners, criterion-referenced assessments, rating scales, etc.)
Administration of additional informal measures including dynamic assessment and language samples with consideration of linguistic and cultural sensitivity
Complete and comprehensive report in both English and Spanish containing all findings and recommendations, diagnosis of speech-language disorder(s) if appropriate, and recommended IEP-friendly goals

Lesley is highly specialized in conducting comprehensive bilingual speech and language evaluations for children of all ages. She has a Bilingual English-Spanish Specialization from Marquette University. She is a certified member of the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) and holds her Professional Educator License (PEL). Lesley has years of hands-on experience evaluating and treating predominantly bilingual caseloads in both outpatient and public school settings. Utilizing a combination of formal and informal assessment, dynamic assessment, and parent/teacher interviews, Lesley’s evaluations provide a school an an accurate, in-depth, and culturally sensitive interpretation of a student’s complete communication profile, including strengths, needs, and recommendations.
